Launching Grow Organic!

I am thrilled to announce that my newest book, Grow Organic, will be launched on March 23rd, 2010 at 7 p.m. at the Halifax Public Library on Spring Garden Road. Come out and help me celebrate! For me this project was a real labour of love, and a way for me to combine my two most passionate interests - writing and gardening. I hope that the reader will find this book a helpful resource for growing a variety of vegetables in Nova Scotia's unique climate. My research for the book involved traveling around the province, from Whycocomagh to Nictaux, from Malagash to the suburbs of Halifax, interviewing  urban and rural growers with all kinds of fascinating specialties, from tomatoes, to millet, to artichokes. These capable and altogether inspiring individuals restored my belief that Nova Scotia can be a self-sufficient province, both in its food and in its knowledge of how to grow in often challenging conditions.  I hope that you'll browse this page for information about the book, as well as tour and event dates; check out my gardening photo essay below!

Grow Organic:
A Simple Guide to Nova Scotia Vegetable Gardening

Grow Organic deals with specifically Nova Scotian issues, giving advice about our growing season, which types of vegetables grow best here, and where to get local organic seeds. The book also contains a chapter of inspirational profiles of specific gardeners and farmers from around the province. The book is written in a friendly, straightforward manner, and is intended as a simple and accessible guide for people with a specific interest in organic vegetable growing. It includes over fifty illustrative photographs and many recipes.
